you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. the family of a giants fan severely beaten at dodgers stadium has a message for dodgers fans. why they should keep wearing dodger blue. a mass accident from a bay area street. the events in the last few days that have them saying enough. well, i have five gallons of water. i've got my flute. >> it's like playing pioneer days. only these people have no choice. life after part of their main roadway crumbled. >> probably the loudest and most annoying job interview ever. tonight the nationwide search for the new voice of a famous duck. and we begin tonight with

breaking news. a fire is forcing people to evacuate from a residential building on eddie street in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. that's just west of union square. initial reports say that fire started in a garbage compacter on the ground floor. it spread up through the building's garage chute and at one point flames were shooting from the roof, which is six stories up. the fire department has been evacuating people from that building. residents are sitting outside on the sidewalk. some have been getting medical attention. some have actually been taken away by ambulance. so far, we haven't heard of any serious injuries. firefighters say part of the roof is in danger of collapse. in fact, the captain has just ordered all firefighters off that rooftop. this fire started about an hour ago and firefighters speak, it is a three alarm blaze. there is heavy smoke in the tenderloin and union square area. we will continue to monitor the

situation and pass on any important updates throughout the evening. a doctor says the giants fan beaten after a dodgers game is showing signs of brain damage. tonight, several of his family members went before cameras. elizabeth cook shows us what they want dodger fans to do now. >> it's hard to see them in bed like that. >> the family of brian stowe have a message for dodger fans. >> we don't hold any of the people of los angeles responsible. we have no hard feelings towards you guys. we know it's not the city as a whole. it's just two people. >> they encourage the fans to wear their dodger blue, because bryant wouldn't want it any other way. >> we love the rivalry. and we welcome it. we have always looked forward to it. we will keep it nice and civil and i expect our fans to show them a safe, enjoyable time. >> giants play the dodgers at

at&t park on monday, april 11. police have not heard of fans for retribution, but they aren't taking any chances. >> there will be increase in police presence on the outside as well as inside of the ball park. >> stowe's family revealed he felt unsafe, even during the game. >> my proceed received a text message from brian during the game where he basically said he was scared inside the stadium. >> a short time later while stowe was heading back to his car, two men dressed in dodgers clothing attacked him. >> we believe there was approximately 100 people near where this assault took place and we would like to reach out to them to contact us and provide whatever information they may have. >> at a bar near at&t park, giants fans, joe garber were saddened, but not surprised.

>> it's such a heated rivalry that something is going to happen, especially when alcohol is involved. >> the giants announced they will dedicate their first home gauge against the dodgers to brian stowe. they will pay tribute to him during the pregame ceremonies as well as collect donations. dana. all right, elizabeth, thank you. in the meantime, a local pizza chain just wrapped up a day long fundraiser for brian stowe. pizza my heart is donating three out of every $10 from today's sales to the stowe family. the owner was also at that dodgers, giants game thursday in los angeles. >> being at that game, i felt like boy, this could have been me. >> i think it's awesome. i think it's a great thing and you know, it makes me want to cry. it's special. >> the chain hoped to raise about $20,000 for the family today. there are a number of rough neighborhoods in the bay area, but tonight, one has become so

dangerous, people are literally packing up and moving out. robert lill shows us what's happening on sycamore drive in antioch. >> lined with apartments, but tonight we found it lined with u-haul trucks and renters racing to get out. >> i'm moving. this is the last straw. >> i went back in the house and get moving. time to go. >> renters are running from what they call the most dangerous street in antioch. afraid they'll become collateral damage. >> oh my goodness. it makes me feel really, really -- i thought this place was safe and i feel insecure. this is my children's room. how could there be a gun shot through a child's room? i feel scared. >> that's because three bullets from a high powered gun ripped through the bedroom window of her nine-year-old son. spiraling through his bunk bed and into the closet. he was saved by a late supper. the target lived next door.

>> there was 50 rounds. at least 50 rounds. >> this eyewitness didn't want to be identified. the five assailants are still out there. what frightened them the most is the shooter stood right here. took a stance, took aim, shooting and smiling the entire time. >> it was pop, pop, pop, pause. pop, pop, pop, pause. >> the teenage victim was shot in the head and is now believed to be paralyzed from the chest down. >> he was right here. >> the shootings are escalating. this man says his son was shot in the leg early monday. bringing the recent total to three shootings in three days on sycamore, including a toddler narrowly missed. >> i couldn't grab my baby, so i just turned around and screamed. >> antioch police did not return our calls for comment on the shootings. meanwhile, it continues. >> you're done. >> we're done, oh yeah.

we are done. >> in antioch, robert lyles, cbs 5. anger, grief, and a demand for justice tonight as the survivors of the deadly san bruno explosion offered solutions for strengthening safety rules for the industry. grace lee on what they had to say. >> san bruno explosion on september 9 not only revealed a network of aging gas lines, but has a california public utilities commission realizing it needs solutions. that's why it held its first public meeting in san bruno today. hundreds attended offering their own remedies. >> it should be banned. and not the cost of the customer, either. >> the fines need to be severe to make sure pg and e takes this seriously. so what i would propose is, for the eight people that died, $100 million each. throw in another $200 million for the people that were injured. bring it to a $1 billion fine, which is the level of profit

that pg and e makes in one year. >> others suggested emergency procedures be set for first responders and practice annually. what has not changed in the seven months since the explosion, the victims anger. it flaired tonight. >> there was nothing left to the house. it desen desingrated. all the hair and flesh on their bodies burnt off. so, i want something to be done about st. >> emotions seemed to be expected. nearly a dozen chp officers stood by watching the proceedings closely. >> frustrated, they are angry, and that's fair enough. that's important for us to be here, to show them that we know who we work for. >> this four hour meeting wasn't just for san bruno residents, people from san francisco all the way down to san jose came here to share their concerns. it's a good reminder that this meeting really affects everyone

here in california. and that's why they'll have two more meetings. in santa rosa and in los angeles. in san bruno, grace lee, cbs 5. twitter will get a huge tax break in exchange for moving into a rough san francisco neighborhood. the board of supervisors approved a payroll tax break for companies who move to or stay in the mid market and tenderloin. supervisors are expect to give another thumb's up next week and the mayor supports the measure. twitter was threatening to move its headquarters out of the city. a shutdown of the federal government is just days away now. congressional leaders meeting at the white house today could not agree on budget cuts. president obama says he believes a deal could get done, but chip reid reports, if there's no agreement, the president wants to make sure that republicans get the blame. >> we are now closer than we have ever been to getting an agreement. there's no reason why we should not get an agreement. >> the president said the

american people don't want thinger pointing. then promptly pointed his finger directly at republicans for refusing to compromise. >> nobody gets 100% of what they want. and we have more than met the republicans half way at this point. >> republican speaker, john boehner says the president is to blame for the standoff, calling mr. obama's budget cuts smoke and mirrors. >> you have heard me say for the last three months that we have no interest in the government shutting down. but we are interested in cutting spending here in washington, d.c. >> if there is a shutdown, what exactly will happen is murky at best. most of the nation's 4.4 million federal employees would continue to work, but hundreds and thousands of nonessential workers would stay home. social security checks would continue to be mailed, but tax refunds from the irs could be delayed and the pentagon said today it's unclear if the troops will be paid on time.

the president said he'll call congressional leaders back to the white house every day this week, if they can't reach a deal on their own. the white house says one thing he's trying to do here is make himself appear to be the adult breaking up a childish battle. championship reid, cbs news, the white house. >> barry bonds may take the stand tomorrow in his perjury trial after the prosecution rested its case today. bonds lawyer says it hasn't been decided whether he will testify. if he does, it would be tomorrow. the judge denied prosecutor's request to introduce recently discovered tape recordings of bonds former business manager and surgeon allegedly discussing steroids. the judge says the tape was mostly inaudible and that much of what she could hear was irrelevant and inadmissible. the trio kidnapped a bus full of kids and buried them alive. now one has been approved for patrol. which of them has been granted

francisco's tenderloin. the fire department says six people have needed medical attention, but we don't know the extent of their injuries. that building on eddie street, which is west of union square has been evacuated. residents are now out of the building on the sidewalk. initial reports say the fire started in the building's garage, or rather garbage compacter, all firefighters had been order off the roof as it is considered close to collapse. we're keeping an eye on this and we'll keep you posted. one of the kidnappers could go free in ten years. the patrol board set a 2021 patrol date for richard allen shoinfeld. holding 26 children and their driver captive under ground. they all escaped without

serious injuries. any governor in the next ten years can ask the board to reconsider its decision to grant parole. he was granted parole in 2008, but the board rescinded that decision. tonight we are hearing from somebody else aboard that muni train with the busted door. it happened during evening rush hour on friday night. cell phone video shows the train traveling from the station with one door open. among the passengers, san francisco city supervisor, scott wehner. he is the bearded man on the left and today, he told us he warned people to move back from that door. >> i asked them if they wanted to squeeze in, but they didn't want to. and so we just went. the operator got on the intercom and announced he was aware of it and people should stand back. >> muni officials admit the door was malfunctioning and the

the wait. frustrated at&t customers waited years for verison's iphone and it was worth the wait. an independent study found verison's iphone dropped significantly fewer calls than at&t's device. customers reported a dropped call rate of 1.8%. still, researchers say users on both services reported similar satisfaction results. job market starting to pick back up. and one job opening is making a lot of noise. mark reports, the line of applicants was long and loud. >> aflac. >> aflac. >> think of it as american
